Underdog Defense Brings Team To Tears

It was week six in a short 8 week kickball season and the Underdogs punched out their second straight shutout and 3rd of the season. The Underdogs have allowed 9 runs in 6 weeks to score. If you take out the first week, they have allowed 4 runs in 5 weeks. The defense is finely tuned and very smart. The whole team collectively of 15-16 some players have put together a defense that is impenetrable. The Koozies in their effort this week faced a new strategy in the Underdogs defense. They moved Chase’s shaky defense to center field, Curtis over to left field, Brad in to Short Stop and Jordan over to 1st Base. This defense only allowed two runners on one time in the seventh inning, and never let a runner past 2nd base! Brad and Jordan played an amazing infield combination mostly built on Brad’s quickness. Jordan was not the tallest 1st basemen ever, but he had his head in the game and made all the outs possible and made good stretches to get runners out.

Chases move to center field was very productive, he caught all the balls kicked out to him, and he made all the right plays, it seems like his new home is a good fit. On the kicking side of things, the Underdogs got great production from their females. DiAnn kicked 3 for 4 with her first RBI and tallied another run scored. Alicia putting on the kickball shirt for the first time also went 3 for 4. Katie added to the teams efforts by going 2 for 3, Lacy couldn’t find a hole, but had some good kicks that were only outs because of great defense, and Sara got her first ever run and RBI single in the game. The girls really brought it to the Koozies this week. Curtis lead the team in kicking with a 4 for 4 effort, Brad, Jordan, and Chase all scored a run. Dad filling in for Beercan had two shots for sacrifices, and made two good kicks, however both opportunities were squandered, the Underdogs still need base running practice.

This next week should prove to be a tough one, Brad, Beercan and Noel will all be absent, however GerriAnn and JoAnn should both be back next week. The Underdogs face the other undefeated team in the division, the Portuguese Men of War who handed the Misfits their 2nd loss this season last night. Brad and Jordan relieved of umping duties were able to scout out this team and determined they were very beatable, especially behind a good defense. Two more weeks then the all day Saturday tournament will decide who takes home the Sioux Falls Kickball T-Shirts, and the Underdogs are heavy favorites.
